Game Concept

TryCoding is a game to help teach young people how to write code. This is done in a playful way by introducing the players bit by bit to programming principles, while playing through an exciting story.

My Contribution

TryCoding was made during my internship at TryCatch Media in Seongnam, South Korea. I was the producer and lead game designer for the project. So on one side I was creating all the mechanics and levels. On the other side I was checking up on the development and art team to see if everything was on schedule.

Game Design

In TryCoding players learn to code by writing code. This starts out easy by writing simple functions to achieve things like walking, shooting etc. When I came in there was no clear direction to what kind of functions there should be. Below is the game design document I wrote for the team.

Level Design

Later in the project I created the levels for Chapter 1 and Chapter 3. I wrote the level design philosophy to make very clear with what mindset we should design levels. My time there was limited so I tried to leave as much usefull documents and information as possible so development would go smoothly for when I left. Below is the level design document I made.

Producing

Second to lead game designer I also produced this project. While we were there, we built some tools to make the development more streamlined. To make sure these tools kept being used by the South Korean collegues after we left, I created some manuals to explain how they worked. Below is the level editor guide I wrote for the team.
